Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition characterized by recurring intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). These symptoms can significantly interfere with daily activities and quality of life.
This session introduces the diagnostic framework of OCD, explaining how obsessions and compulsions manifest and differ across individuals. Common themes such as contamination, checking, and symmetry are discussed.
The neurobiological basis of OCD is explored, including abnormalities in brain circuits and neurotransmitter systems. Genetic and environmental influences are also examined.
Participants will learn about effective treatment strategies, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP), which are considered gold standards in OCD treatment.
Pharmacological options such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are also covered, along with emerging therapies and technological interventions.
By the end of the session, attendees will have a deeper understanding of OCD and practical tools for diagnosis, treatment planning, and improving patient outcomes in anxiety spectrum disorders.
